A Fitness Academy Helps People Find Their Inner Mermaid/Merman

By Kelley Rowland

A couple of years ago, Anamie Saenz and Normeth Preglo of the Philippines wanted to start a class that would become the next fitness craze. So they appealed to the fairy tale femme in all of us and started a how-to-be-a-mermaid academy called the Philippines Mermaid Swimming Academy. Photo by Getty Images

The academy teaches the activity it refers to as "mermaiding, an artistic expression and fun whimsical way to keep fit." The PMSA is the first school in the world that focuses on the concept of mermaid swimming and also the first to make it accessible to the masses. Usually these kinds of classes are exclusively geared toward professional performers and entertainers.

To fully embrace the under-the-sea existence, participants wear colorful mermaid tails made of a stretch fabric with a monofin at the end. The tail is essential for the workout, as it restricts both legs and helps wearers focus on using their core muscles for movement. An introductory class is $40 and while you participate, photos are snapped of your mermaid adventures. It's open to people of all ages and gender and the instructors even offer mermaid scuba diving and mermaid water scootering.
